Johnson County Fair

The parade will begin Saturday July 17, 2010 in Franklin at approximately 3:00p.m.

Whiteland Volunteer Fire Department is proud to be a strong representative of the community in this parade. You will get a chance to see the volunteer firefighters in the parade showing all of the spectators how wonderful the residents of this community are to assist us in having such wonderful equipment.

Whiteland Volunteer Fire Department has the prestigious honor to provide emergency medical service to the grandstands at the Johnson County Fair during all of the shows. We do not take this lightly and find it truly special to be able to work with all of the wonderful people at the fairgrounds. We could not do this without the gracious donations by the members of our community in years past that allowed us to purchase the WVFD Ambulance 71.  We have already touched so many lives due to this ambulance and we are prepared to keep paying it forward with events such as this.

We hope to see you all at the fair the week of July 18 - 24 at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Franklin, Indiana. Be sure to stop by Saturday July 24 at the Johnson County Firefighters Tent to say hello and ask how to become a volunteer... We would love the opportunity to visit with you and your family.

And don't forget to give WVFD a big wave and smile during the parade... we will be watching for you...

Have a fun and safe Johnson County Fair!!!

Holland Invades WVFD

Sunday May02, 2010

Whiteland Volunteer Firefighters were honored to meet a great group of visiting firefighters and ems personnel from Holland. The firefighters were part of Brandweer Fire Brigade & EMS were from KIJLSTRA Ambulancegroep out of Fryslan Holland.

The visitors were given a tour of the fire trucks and equipment used and were even given a chance to handle our the WVFD equipment noting the major differences in equipment and how both countries fight fires with different equipment. The group was also given a special tour of the Whiteland Volunteer Fire Department.

The group of seven were then treated to a wonderful lunch at Kasey's Restaurant a true staple of Whiteland and commented on how good the food was in Whiteland.

The group was supposed to be in Indiana during the FDIC firefighters conference held downtown Indianapolis April 19-24 this year. Unfortunately due to the volcanic ash from Iceland their trip was postponed to this past week not allowing them to be a part of the FDIC. Several Agencies including:

Whiteland Volunteer Fire Department

Rural Metro Ambulance

Greenwood Fire Department

White River Township Fire Department

Indianapolis Fire Department

All of these agencies came together and gave them private tours of their stations and equipment. The group was also given special tours of the city as well as surrounding venues to entertain them while they were in town.

The group commented repeatedly "Americans are wonderful people and made them all feel at home...IT IS GOOD!!!"

So special thanks to all of the wonderful people who made their stay so wonderful.

Information About Thunderstorms

Thunderstorm Facts
Thunderstorms affect relatively small areas compared to hurricanes and winter storms, but despite their small size, all thunderstorms are dangerous! Of the estimated 100,000 thunderstorms that occur each year in the United States, about 10 percent are classified as severe.

The National Weather Service considers a thunderstorm severe if it produces hail at least 3/4-inch in diameter, winds of 58 mph or stronger, or a tornado.

Strong winds can exceed 100 mph, causing damage equal to a tornado. Hail causes more than $1 billion in crop and property damage each year. Large stones fall at speeds faster than 100 mph.

Eighteen thousand thunderstorms are occurring at any moment around the world. That's 16 million a year!

Appropriate actions to take during a severe thunderstorm

  • Seek shelter in a building or vehicle immediately.

  • Shutter windows, close window blinds, shades, or curtains and secure outside doors.

  • Avoid showering or bathing, as plumbing and bathroom fixtures can conduct electricity.

  • Use a corded telephone only for emergencies. Cordless and cell phones are safe to use.

  • Unplug appliances and other electrical items, such as computers, and turn off air conditioners. Power surges from lightning can cause serious damage

  • Keep abreast of the latest weather forecasts and prepare for possible tornadoes.

Planning and preparedness help to minimize weather related deaths and injuries and property damage. Every family, school and business should take time now to review or create a severe weather safety action plan. The statewide tornado drills scheduled for tomorrow provide an excellent time to practice these plans.

The emergency alert system will be activated statewide tomorrow, March 17, at 10:15-10:30 a.m. EDT and again at 7:35-7:50 p.m. EDT on commercial radio, television networks all hazards radios

Clocks are springing forward!!!

Sunday March 14, 2010 is the day we set our clocks forward... an easy way to remember which direction to set our clocks is Spring Forward and Fall Back.

Daylight Savings Time is also a great time to do some safety changes in your house. Take the time to change all of the batteries in your smoke / carbon monoxide detectors, change the air filter on your furnace, clean the dryer vent outside and inside of your clothes dryer. These simple tasks can prevent some serious damage to your home not to mention help protect your family.

Whiteland Volunteer Fire Department upgrades station with new Gear Grid

With the cost of gear being so expensive we try to take the best care as possible to protect it and prolong the life of all of our equipment. We also are very proud of our fire station so we have found a way to store our gear and keep the station looking nice and organized. Gear Grid is a company that offers many styles of gear racks for not only fire departments but also major sporting venues as well. Below you will see pictures of the rack we relied on for many years and has recently began falling apart... then you will see the new and improved look of Station 71 bays.

Above are the before pictures.... And below are the new improvements with Gear Grid...

Thanks to the support of our community and the district board for all you do to support the
Whiteland Volunteer Fire Department.
